Chapter XII (SOLAS)

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Additional safety measures for bulk carriers.

SOLAS Chapter XII sets additional safety measures for bulk carriers, added after a series of bulk-carrier losses in the 1990s. It applies mainly to single-side-skin bulk carriers of 150 m in length and over carrying cargoes of 1,000 kg/m3 and above, and prescribes survivability after flooding of the foremost hold, structural strength, and loading restrictions. The Loading Instrument and water-ingress alarm requirements flow from this chapter.
