Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
CITES is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed in Washington on 3 March 1973 and in force since 1975, with over 180 parties. It regulates cross-border trade through three appendices: Appendix I lists species threatened with extinction, banning commercial international trade; Appendix II covers species that may become threatened without trade controls, allowing permitted trade; Appendix III lists species a party regulates with help from others. Marine listings include many sharks, rays, corals, seahorses, and sea turtles. Permits and non-detriment findings condition any legal trade in listed marine species.
