Coastal Class society

A coastal class society is a domestic or regional classification body, recognized by a flag administration, that certifies vessels restricted to coastal, near-coastal, or inland service rather than unrestricted ocean trade. These bodies are usually not IACS members, so they may apply lighter scantling and survey requirements suited to limited service range, sheltered waters, and shorter voyages. A flag state appoints one as a recognized organization under SOLAS regulation XI-1/1 and the RO Code, delegating survey and certification for the national fleet. Class assigned by a non-IACS coastal society can limit a ship’s trading area and affect port-state acceptance and P&I cover.
