Definition

Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972; the IMO rules of the road governing lights, shapes, sound signals, and collision avoidance.

The Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs) sets the navigational rules of the road that govern lights, shapes, sound and light signals, and steering and sailing conduct between vessels. The IMO Conference adopted it on 20 October 1972, and it entered into force on 15 July 1977. Its 41 Rules and four technical Annexes apply to all vessels on the high seas and connected navigable waters. Rule 2 preserves the duty of good seamanship; Part B governs conduct in any visibility, in sight of one another, and in restricted visibility.
