Common Structural Rules (CSR-BC&OT)

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

Harmonized class rules.

The Harmonized Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers entered force on 1 July 2015, merging the two separate 2006 CSR sets into one consistent IACS rule set for ships 90 meters and over. They prescribe net-thickness scantlings with explicit corrosion additions, direct strength analysis by finite element for cargo-hold structure, and fatigue assessment, replacing the older prescriptive-only approach. The CSR are the structural backbone of the IMO Goal-Based Standards verification for these two ship types.
