Items controlled under US ITAR.
A defense article is any item, technical data, or software designated on the United States Munitions List (USML) and therefore controlled for export under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the regulations issued under the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 (22 U.S.C. 2778). The term is defined at 22 CFR 120.31. It covers warships, weapons, military aircraft, and related technical data; exporting or brokering a defense article requires a license or agreement from the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
