Deltares

D5. Coastal processes, sea-level, cryosphere and ocean observation science

Definition

Dutch institute developing tools such as Delft3D for coastal modeling.

Deltares is an independent applied-research institute in Delft, Netherlands, focused on water and subsurface engineering, formed in 2008 from several Dutch hydraulics laboratories including WL Delft Hydraulics. It develops and maintains the modeling software used across coastal and hydraulic engineering, including the Delft3D suite and its successor Delft3D Flexible Mesh, the SWAN wave model line, and Delft-FEWS forecasting platform. Deltares supports flood-risk, dredging, port, morphology, and water-quality studies worldwide, and contributes to storm-surge and coastal-defense design behind much of Dutch delta engineering.
