Demonstration Project

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Pilot project for new fuels or technologies.

A demonstration project tests a new fuel, propulsion technology, or operating method at near-commercial scale to prove technical and economic viability before fleet rollout. In maritime decarbonization these projects validate ammonia and methanol engines, fuel-cell systems, wind-assisted propulsion, and onboard carbon capture under real sea conditions, generating the operating data that newbuild and retrofit decisions need. They typically pair shipowners, engine makers, class societies, and fuel suppliers, and often anchor a green corridor. The output is bankable evidence: measured fuel consumption, emissions, safety performance, and bunkering logistics that a paper study cannot supply.
