Green Ammonia

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Ammonia produced from renewable hydrogen via the Haber-Bosch process.

Green ammonia is ammonia synthesized by the Haber-Bosch process from nitrogen and green hydrogen made by electrolysis with renewable electricity, so its well-to-tank carbon is near zero. Combined with zero tank-to-wake CO2, it is one of the few fuels offering a near-complete well-to-wake cut, which is why it features in most deep-sea net-zero pathways. Cost and renewable-power supply are the constraints, alongside managing toxicity, N2O, and ammonia slip in the engine and exhaust.
