DNV Smart Notation

DNV’s Smart class notation certifies that defined digital and data-driven functions on a ship meet DNV rules for ships, Part 6 Chapter 5. It uses functional qualifiers such as Smart (data infrastructure and connectivity), with related descriptive notations for condition-based machinery monitoring, decision support, and remote operation. The notation gives owners and charterers third-party assurance that sensors, data servers, and onboard analytics were verified, often built on data standards ISO 19847 (shipboard data servers) and ISO 19848 (standard data for machinery).
