A6. Public international law of the sea

Definition

UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.

The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) is the unit of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs that serves as the secretariat for UNCLOS. It supports the meeting of states parties, services the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, maintains the deposit of charts and lists of geographical coordinates of maritime baselines and limits required under the convention, and provides legal and technical advice and capacity building to states. DOALOS administers the UN trust funds associated with the convention and publishes the Law of the Sea Bulletin. It does not adjudicate disputes; that role belongs to ITLOS, the ICJ, and arbitral tribunals.
