Dry docking

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

Periodic dry dock survey, typically every five years.

Taking the ship out of the water in a dry dock or onto a slipway for survey, hull cleaning and coating, tailshaft and rudder work, and underwater repairs. Class and the convention regime normally require two dockings in any five-year period, with no more than 36 months between them, though an approved in-water survey can substitute for the intermediate docking on some ships. A docking is the largest scheduled OPEX event in a ship’s cycle and is planned years ahead.
