Yard repair
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
Repair work carried out at a shipyard.
Yard repair is shipyard work on a vessel’s structure and machinery, carried out alongside or in dry dock, covering steel renewal, tank and coating work, machinery overhaul, and class-survey items. It is usually scheduled around the periodic class surveys: the annual, the intermediate, and the special survey every five years, with the docking survey and the propeller, tailshaft, and underwater-fitting work that needs the ship out of water. The owner agrees a repair specification with the yard and the attending class surveyor, who witnesses and credits the survey items so the classification and statutory certificates can be re-endorsed. Steelwork is gauged against class wastage limits, and completed repairs are recorded for the next survey cycle.
