EH36 steel
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
HT steel with -40 °C Charpy.
EH36 is the E-grade member of the 355 MPa minimum-yield higher-tensile steel family under IACS UR W11, tested by Charpy V-notch impact at minus 40 degrees Celsius. The lower test temperature certifies notch toughness for cold-climate and ice-class structure where brittle fracture risk is greatest. The grade ladder runs A (no low-temperature test), D (minus 20), E (minus 40), and F (minus 60), and the designer picks the grade from the design service temperature and the plate thickness, since required toughness rises with both.
