Polar Code modifications
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
Retrofit modifications for Polar Code compliance.
Polar Code modifications are the design and equipment changes a ship needs to operate in Arctic and Antarctic waters under the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters, mandatory since 1 January 2017 through SOLAS chapter XIV and MARPOL amendments. They include winterized machinery and ballast systems, low-temperature steel grades (the E and F impact-test grades of IACS UR W11 for hull and exposed structure), heated or covered lifesaving appliances, ice-strengthening to the assigned polar class, and enhanced navigation and communication fit. A ship earns a Polar Ship Certificate and a Polar Water Operational Manual after these modifications are verified, with categories A, B, and C set by ice capability.
