Traditional document issued to seafarers crossing the line.
Informal certificate issued to a seafarer or passenger after the ‘crossing the line’ ceremony, the traditional initiation held when a ship crosses the equator at 0 degrees latitude. The rite, presided over by a crew member costumed as King Neptune, marks the transition from ‘pollywog’ (one who has not crossed) to ‘shellback’. The certificate is a souvenir of seafaring custom; it carries no regulatory, certification, or legal standing under SOLAS or STCW.
