F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

STCW-rated deck rating qualified beyond ordinary seaman.

An able seaman is a certificated deck rating qualified beyond the entry-level ordinary seaman, holding the STCW Regulation II/5 able seafarer deck certificate and able to form part of a navigational watch under Regulation II/4. The grade requires roughly 18 months of approved deck service and demonstrated competence in helmsmanship, mooring, cargo handling, and maintenance. The AB is the backbone of the deck-rating workforce, working under the boatswain and standing lookout or wheel duty for the officer of the watch.
