Definition

Franklin Expedition wreck located in 2014 in Wilmot and Crampton Bay.

HMS Erebus was a Royal Navy bomb vessel, launched 1826, that with HMS Terror formed Sir John Franklin’s 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage; both ships and all 129 men were lost. Erebus had earlier carried James Clark Ross to Antarctica (1839 to 1843), where the Ross volcano Mount Erebus bears its name. Parks Canada located the wreck of Erebus on 2 September 2014 in Wilmot and Crampton Bay, off King William Island, guided by Inuit testimony; Terror was found in 2016.
