B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

EU regulation on recycling.

EU Regulation 1257/2013, the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, governs the recycling of EU-flagged ships and the carriage of an Inventory of Hazardous Materials by ships calling at EU and EEA ports. EU-flag ships of 500 GT and above may be recycled only at a facility on the European List of approved ship recycling facilities, which includes yards outside the EU that meet its standards. Any ship of 500 GT and above visiting an EU or EEA port must hold a valid IHM regardless of flag, applied to existing ships from 31 December 2020. The IHM has three parts: Part I hazardous materials in structure and equipment, Part II operational waste, Part III stores.
