EU mission enforcing the UN arms embargo on Libya.
EUNAVFOR MED Operation Irini, launched 31 March 2020 under Council Decision (CFSP) 2020/472, whose primary task is enforcing the UN arms embargo on Libya imposed by UN Security Council Resolution 1970 (2011) and successors. Operating in the central Mediterranean, Irini uses naval, air, and satellite assets to monitor and inspect vessels suspected of breaching the embargo, and secondarily monitors illegal oil exports and human-smuggling networks. It succeeded Operation Sophia and is named for the Greek word for peace. It is separate from the Somalia-focused Operation Atalanta.
