Ever Given
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
20,124 TEU ULCV (Suez 2021 incident).
Ever Given is a 20,124 TEU ultra-large container vessel built by Imabari Shipbuilding in 2018, owned by Shoei Kisen Kaisha and operated by Evergreen Marine. She is 399.94 m long and 59 m wide, one of the Imabari 20,000 TEU series. On 23 March 2021, bound from Tanjung Pelepas to Rotterdam, she ran aground and wedged diagonally across the Suez Canal during a sandstorm with high winds, blocking the waterway for six days. Salvors and dredgers freed her on 29 March, after roughly 400 ships had queued at both ends. Egypt detained the vessel until a settlement in July 2021. The grounding is the reference case for ULCV windage and single-channel chokepoint risk.
