Ex Works

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

EXW, Incoterm 2020.

EXW (Ex Works) is the Incoterms 2020 rule that places the least obligation on the seller. The seller makes the goods available at its own premises, named place specified, and the buyer bears all cost and risk from that point, including loading onto the collecting vehicle and export clearance. ICC guidance flags EXW as ill-suited to cross-border trade because the buyer cannot usually complete export formalities in the seller’s country; FCA is the recommended substitute.
