Excluded ports

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Ports excluded from the trading limits of a charter.

Excluded ports are places struck out of a charter party’s trading limits, so the charterer may not order the vessel to them. They sit alongside excluded countries and war or ice exclusions and reflect insurance restrictions, sanctions, owner preference, or hull-cover conditions. Ordering the vessel to an excluded port is a breach for which the owner can refuse the order or claim the cost of any additional war-risk or breach premium. The clause is usually drafted as ’trading worldwide always within Institute Warranty Limits, excluding…’ followed by the named ports, zones, or states.
