Exocet
E2. Naval, defence and maritime law enforcementDefinition
Family of French-built anti-ship missiles.
Exocet is a family of French sea-skimming anti-ship cruise missiles built by Aerospatiale, now MBDA. Variants include the ship-launched MM38 and MM40 (Block 3 range exceeding 180 km), the air-launched AM39, and the submarine-launched SM39. It flies low under inertial mid-course guidance with active radar terminal homing. Exocet’s reputation dates to 1982, when Argentine AM39s struck and sank the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Sheffield and the container ship Atlantic Conveyor during the Falklands conflict, and an Iraqi AM39 hit the USS Stark in 1987.
