Definition

Guided-missile frigate.

FFG is the US Navy hull classification symbol for a guided-missile frigate, a frigate (FF) whose air-defense and anti-ship armament centers on guided missiles. The Oliver Hazard Perry class (FFG-7, in service 1977 to 2015) carried a single-arm Mk 13 launcher for Standard SM-1 and Harpoon and was the type ship for decades. The US Navy revived the class with the Constellation class (FFG-62), ordered 2020, which carries the Mk 41 VLS, an AN/SPY-6 derivative, and the Aegis combat system.
