DDG

E2. Naval, defence and maritime law enforcement

Definition

Guided-missile destroyer.

DDG is the US Navy hull classification symbol for a guided-missile destroyer, a destroyer (DD) whose primary battery is surface-to-air, anti-ship, and land-attack guided missiles rather than guns. The Arleigh Burke class (DDG-51, commissioned 1991 onward) is the type ship: Aegis combat system, AN/SPY-1 radar, and 96 Mk 41 vertical-launch cells firing Standard SM-2/SM-6, ESSM, ASROC, and Tomahawk. The trailing G distinguishes it from the gun-armed DD; DDG is now the workhorse multi-mission surface combatant of the US fleet.
