Fire detection system (FDS)

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

SOLAS-compliant smoke/heat detection network.

A fire detection system (FDS) is the SOLAS-required network of smoke, heat, and flame detectors, manual call points, and a continuously manned control panel that gives early warning of fire and identifies the affected zone. SOLAS Ch II-2 mandates fixed detection and alarm in machinery spaces, accommodation, and control stations, with sample-extraction or addressable detectors so each loop pinpoints the source. The panel logs alarms, supervises wiring for faults, and on many ships initiates ventilation and fuel shutdown and releases the fixed fire-fighting medium. Detector type and spacing follow the FSS Code.
