Fishery Training

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

National fisheries training schools such as Norway's Vardo college.

Fishery training prepares deck and engine crew for commercial fishing vessels, a regime separate from merchant-marine STCW certification. The applicable instrument is the STCW-F Convention (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel, 1995), which entered force 29 September 2012. National fisheries colleges, such as Norway’s Vardo and Bardufoss schools, award skipper and engineer grades. The IMO/FAO/ILO fishing-vessel safety framework, including the Cape Town Agreement (2012), sets the wider safety baseline these programs train toward.
