Fleet Xpress

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Inmarsat Ka-band/L-band hybrid service.

Fleet Xpress is Inmarsat’s managed maritime broadband service pairing Ka-band Global Xpress (the I-5 satellite constellation) for high throughput with L-band FleetBroadband as automatic failover. When rain fade or beam edge degrades the Ka link, traffic switches to the resilient L-band path so the vessel keeps a connection. Inmarsat markets it as a single managed package with committed information rates plus a bandwidth pool. The product name is Fleet Xpress, not Fleet Express; it combines GX high capacity with L-band continuity for crew welfare, IoT, and operational data.
