Forenoon watch

B3. Nautical Science

Definition

0800-1200 watch.

The forenoon watch is the watch from 0800 to 1200, one of the seven traditional watches in the maritime day. The full sequence runs first watch (2000 to 0000), middle watch (0000 to 0400), morning watch (0400 to 0800), forenoon watch (0800 to 1200), afternoon watch (1200 to 1600), then the two short dog watches (1600 to 1800 and 1800 to 2000) that rotate the rota so no officer stands the same hours daily. On a three-watch ship the forenoon watch falls to the same officer who keeps the 2000 to 0000, fitting the common 4-on-8-off bridge rotation. The noon sight and the day’s run are worked at the close of this watch.
