Noon position

B3. Nautical Science

Definition

Daily fix near LAN reported to the company.

The noon position is the daily fix worked around Local Apparent Noon and reported to the company in the noon report. Classically it combined a forenoon Sun sight run up to noon with the noon meridian altitude: the meridian altitude gave latitude, and the running-fix transfer of the morning line across the noon latitude gave longitude. The noon report logs this position with the day’s run, average speed, distance to go, and fuel and weather. With GNSS the position is read electronically, but the noon report remains the standard 24-hour accounting point in commercial voyage and charter-party practice.
