Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR)

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

Thermal imaging used in anti-piracy lookout.

A thermal-imaging sensor that detects the infrared radiation emitted by objects, producing a usable image in darkness, haze, and smoke without visible light. On ships and patrol aircraft it supports anti-piracy lookout, man-overboard and SAR search, and night navigation by showing the heat signature of skiffs, swimmers, and dark vessels that a radar or the naked eye would miss. BMP5 lists enhanced visual and thermal lookout among the hardening measures for high-risk-area transits.
