Coating that prevents firm attachment of biofouling.

A foul-release coating prevents firm attachment of biofouling through surface properties rather than biocides. Silicone (PDMS) and fluoropolymer elastomers create a low-surface-energy, low-modulus film that organisms cannot grip; accumulated growth sheds under hydrodynamic shear once the vessel moves above roughly 10 to 15 knots. Because they release no copper or booster biocide, foul-release systems sidestep the leaching concerns that constrain biocidal antifoulants under the AFS Convention. Their limits are mechanical: poor performance on slow or idle vessels, vulnerability to abrasion damage, and higher application cost.
