Galleon Wrecks of the Manila Run

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Wrecks such as San Diego and Nuestra Senora de Atocha.

Wrecks of the Spanish galleons that crossed the Pacific between Manila and Acapulco from 1565 to 1815, carrying Asian silk and porcelain east and Mexican silver west. The San Diego, sunk off Fortune Island near Manila in 1600 and excavated by Franck Goddio’s team in 1991 to 1993, yielded thousands of Ming porcelain pieces. Other losses on the route included the Santa Margarita and Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion (1638, Saipan). Note: the Nuestra Senora de Atocha (1622, Florida Keys) was a Caribbean treasure-fleet ship, not a Manila galleon.
