General Cargo Ship

X9. Cargo Securing, Lashing and Stability Vocabulary

Definition

Multipurpose vessel; lashing arrangements per CSM and CSS Code.

A general cargo ship carries packaged, palletized, and unitized goods plus project and breakbulk cargo in tween-deck and box holds, often with its own cranes for ports without shore gear. Multipurpose variants combine general cargo, containers, and heavy lifts. Stowage and securing follow the ship’s cargo securing manual and the CSS Code, with lashing calculations for accelerations at sea. Once dominant, the type has lost liner trades to containerization but remains essential for heavy-lift, project, and minor-bulk movements that do not suit cellular or bulk tonnage.
