Cargo Securing Manual

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required under SOLAS VI/5 and VII/5.

The cargo securing manual is a ship-specific document, approved by the administration or a recognized class society, describing the securing arrangements and the procedures for stowing and lashing non-bulk cargo. SOLAS VI/5.6 and VII/5 require it for all ships other than those carrying solid or liquid bulk. Its content follows the CSS Code (Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing) and MSC.1/Circ.1353, covering lashing-point strengths, securing-device inventories, and the calculation method for accelerations at sea. Container ships also maintain it alongside an approved cargo stowage and securing arrangement.
