Genoa
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Overlapping headsail used on Bermudian-rigged yachts.
A genoa is a large headsail whose foot overlaps the mast, measured by the percentage its clew passes the mast as a 130 or 150 percent genoa. The extra area drives a Bermudian sloop in light and moderate air, where the working jib would be too small, and the overlap fills the slot behind the mainsail. Crews change down to a smaller jib as the wind builds. The headsail is reeved through fairleads and trimmed on genoa sheets.
