Sloop
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Single-masted fore-and-aft rigged vessel with one headsail.
A sloop carries a single mast with a fore-and-aft mainsail and one headsail set on a forestay, the most common rig on modern yachts because it is efficient upwind and simple to handle. A masthead sloop runs the forestay to the top of the mast; a fractional rig terminates it part-way up, which lets the mainsail do more of the work and the rig be bent to control sail shape. The jib or genoa is the headsail; a knockabout sloop carries no bowsprit.
