Global Marine Litter Partnership (GPML)
D3. Marine environmental science, pollution and conservationDefinition
UNEP-led partnership addressing marine litter.
The Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML) is a UNEP-coordinated multi-stakeholder platform launched in 2012 to share knowledge, harmonize monitoring, and coordinate action on marine litter and plastic pollution. It links governments, UN agencies, industry, academia, and NGOs and hosts the Digital Platform, a data hub aggregating litter datasets, indicators, and policy resources. GPML supports implementation of UNEP Assembly resolutions, including the 2022 mandate to negotiate a global plastics treaty, and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 14.1 on reducing marine pollution. Its harmonized monitoring guidance underpins comparable beach- and seabed-litter indices across regional seas programs.
