Marine Litter Watch

D3. Marine environmental science, pollution and conservation

Definition

EEA-supported citizen science marine litter monitoring.

Marine LitterWatch is a citizen-science app and database run by the European Environment Agency that lets volunteers and beach-cleanup groups record marine-litter surveys to a common standard. Users log items by the EU Master List of litter categories along a defined beach stretch, and the geotagged data feed the EEA’s litter assessments and the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive Descriptor 10 monitoring on beach-litter abundance. By standardizing categories and survey method, it makes volunteer data comparable with official OSPAR and regional-seas monitoring, expanding spatial coverage for source identification and trend detection across European seas.
