Halocline

A halocline is a vertical layer with a strong salinity gradient. It is the dominant density control in regions where temperature is nearly uniform, such as the Arctic, where a cold, fresh surface layer overlies warmer, saltier Atlantic water and the halocline shields sea ice from that heat. In estuaries the halocline marks the boundary between fresh river outflow and intruding seawater.
