Pycnocline

D1. Physical and chemical oceanography and marine meteorology

Definition

Vertical layer with rapid density change.

The pycnocline is the vertical layer of rapid density increase that separates the lighter surface mixed layer from the denser deep ocean. Its strong stratification (high Brunt-Vaisala frequency) suppresses vertical mixing, traps nutrients below it, and guides internal waves. In most of the open ocean it coincides with the thermocline; in high-latitude and estuarine waters the halocline sets it instead.
