Hatch cover (Macgregor)

A MacGregor hatch cover is a steel weathertight closure over a cargo hold, supplied by MacGregor, a long-established maker of side-rolling, folding, and lift-away covers for bulk carriers and general cargo ships. Hydraulic cylinders or chain drives open and close the panels, and rubber gaskets seating on a coaming compression bar seal against green seas. Weathertightness is checked by hose test or ultrasonic tightness testing, since leaking covers are a leading cause of wet-cargo and water-ingress claims. The covers carry the load line assignment for openings in position 1 and 2 under the International Load Line Convention.
