HMNZS Philomel Training Base

The main administrative and training establishment of the Royal New Zealand Navy, part of Devonport Naval Base on Auckland’s North Shore. It began in 1921 when the obsolete cruiser HMS Philomel, engines and armament removed, was moored at Devonport and used as a training ship. On the creation of the RNZN in October 1941 the establishment was recommissioned as HMNZS Philomel, and in January 1947 it became a land establishment. It now houses naval training classrooms, trainee accommodation, and support functions.
