The non-marine onboard departments of a cruise ship, covering accommodation, food and beverage, housekeeping, entertainment, retail, and guest services, usually headed by a hotel director ranking alongside the captain in the command structure. These functions distinguish a cruise ship from a cargo vessel and drive its crew-to-passenger ratio, often near 1:2. Galley and provision handling fall under public-health regimes such as the US CDC Vessel Sanitation Program and the EU SHIPSAN standard, while waste streams meet MARPOL Annex IV and V.
