Hover-craft skirt material
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
PVC-coated polyester used in ACV refit.
A hovercraft skirt is the flexible curtain that traps the air cushion between the hull and the surface, made from neoprene- or chlorosulfonated-polyethylene-coated nylon or polyester fabric. The coated fabric must be airtight, abrasion-resistant, and stay flexible through repeated flexing, so two or more bonded fabric layers are common. Two skirt geometries dominate: the bag skirt, a continuous inflated tube, and the segmented or finger skirt, built from individual replaceable segments that take the wear at the hem. Skirt material and segment replacement are routine maintenance items in air-cushion-vehicle and landing-craft-air-cushion refits.
