Cargo that reacts dangerously with acids and must be segregated under IMDG 7.2.4 from SGG1 substances.

Authorized Container Repair under CSC Convention, prerequisite for any CTU offered for IMDG carriage.
Activation Energy
Threshold energy required to initiate decomposition of self reactive Class 4.1 or organic peroxide Class 5.2 substances.
Active Material

Ammonia, Anhydrous
Carried refrigerated (-33 C) on fully refrigerated LPG/ammonia carriers; toxic.
Ammonium Nitrate Based Fertilizer

Ammunition

Asphalt
Not regulated unless transported hot, in which case UN 3257 Class 9 elevated temperature substance applies.
Assigned Stowage Category
Letter A, B, C, D or E given in column 16a of the Dangerous Goods List for each UN entry.
Audit Trail
Documented chain of survey evidence including photos, logs, and instrument records.
Authorized Person
Individual qualified under IMDG 1.3 training requirements to perform classification, packing or documentation.
Auto Ignition Temperature
Minimum temperature at which a substance ignites without external flame.
Aviation Regulated Liquid NOS
UN 3334, Class 9 liquid regulated only for air transport, generally not regulated under IMDG.
Away From
Segregation term in IMDG 7.2.1 requiring sufficient distance to prevent mutual hazardous interaction.

Bagged cargo
Dry bulk commodities carried in bags rather than loose.
Bale
Compressed unit of flexible material, regulated as dangerous goods only when meeting specific UN entries such as cotton wet UN 1365.
Barge
Tank vessel used for bunker delivery alongside ocean-going ships in port and at anchorage.
Barium Azide Dry
UN 0224, Class 1.1A explosive primary substance.
Barium Chlorate Solid

Waste containing infectious substances, regulated under UN 3291 Class 6.2.
Bisulfites Aqueous Solution NOS

Black Powder Compressed
UN 0028, Class 1.1D explosive substance.
Black Powder Granular
UN 0027, Class 1.1D explosive substance for blasting or pyrotechnic use.
Blasting Agent
Explosive material designed for blasting, with UN numbers across Division 1.1D to 1.5D.
Boiling Point
Temperature at which liquid boils at standard pressure, relevant to portable tank instruction selection.
Bolster
Container support structure on flat racks that must accommodate proper IMDG securing of dangerous goods.
Bomb Smoke Non Explosive
UN 2028, Class 8 corrosive solid, despite the word bomb.
Booster Without Detonator
UN 0042, Class 1.1D explosive used to increase detonation.
Bottle Pressurized
Generic shipping term for IMDG pressure receptacles per ISO 11118 or UN cylinders.

LPG component; carried fully pressurized, semi-refrigerated, or fully refrigerated.

Compressed Gas
Gas which when packaged under pressure is entirely gaseous at minus 50 degrees Celsius.
Concentration
Mass or volume fraction of active substance critical to assignment of correct UN entry and packing group.
Confined Space
Space with limited access where dangerous goods may accumulate hazardous atmospheres, addressed in EmS spill schedules.
Conflagration
Mass burning event, the controlling hazard for Class 1.3.
Consignee
Party to whom goods are consigned.
Consignment
One or more packages of dangerous goods presented by a consignor for transport.
Consignor
Shipper named in the bill of lading.
Constant Wattage Heater
Heating system used on tank containers transporting solidifying cargoes that fall under IMDG elevated temperature provisions.
Container
ISO 668-defined intermodal freight unit.
Container Packing Certificate
CPC, declaration signed by the person responsible for packing a container that IMDG packing requirements are met.
Containment System
Total assembly of receptacles and packaging components that retain dangerous goods, central to IMDG Part 6 testing.
Contamination
Presence of soluble salts, oil, dust, or other deleterious matter on a substrate prior to coating.
Continuous Examination Program
ACEP scheme accepted under CSC for IMDG containers in lieu of periodic examination.
Contributory Hazard
Synonym for subsidiary risk, the secondary hazard class shown in parentheses on the DG declaration.
Convection Drying
Cargo conditioning process unrelated directly to IMDG but may affect moisture content of self heating Class 4.2 substances.

Cumulative Quantity
Sum of LQ or EQ packages allowed per consignment under IMDG 3.4 and 3.5.

Historical unit of radioactivity, 3.7 by ten to the tenth becquerel, replaced by becquerel in IMDG.

Lithium battery condition requiring special UN 3171 or 3536 carriage or, where prohibited, no transport.
Damaged Lithium Battery

Generic term for IMDG class label or subsidiary risk label affixed to packages.
