ICS

A7. Compliance, certification and enforcement

Definition

International Chamber of Shipping, industry body.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the principal trade association for merchant shipowners and operators, representing national shipowner associations whose members control a large share of the world fleet. ICS develops industry positions at the IMO, the ILO, and other bodies, and publishes practical guidance and benchmarking tools, including the annual Flag State Performance Table. It produces widely used industry publications on bridge procedures, tanker safety, and other operational standards. ICS is an advocacy and standards-setting industry body; it has no regulatory or enforcement power, which rests with flag States, port States, and the IMO.
