IEC 62443

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Industrial automation security standard, applied in OT shipboard networks.

IEC 62443 is the international standard series for security of industrial automation and control systems (IACS), developed by IEC TC65 with ISA. It is structured in four parts: general concepts, policies and procedures, system-level requirements with the foundational requirements and security levels SL 1-4, and component-level requirements for product suppliers. Maritime class societies adopt it as the operational-technology security baseline; IACS UR E26 and E27 draw their technical controls from IEC 62443, applying them to onboard computer-based systems on ships contracted for construction on or after 1 July 2024.
