Inland AIS
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
AIS for inland waterways under EU directives.
Inland AIS is the version of the Automatic Identification System adapted for inland waterways, carrying inland-specific data such as vessel and convoy dimensions, blue-cone hazardous-cargo signs, and the number of persons on board. It is the tracking and tracing element of River Information Services. In the European Union it sits under the RIS Directive 2005/44/EC, with technical specifications in Commission Regulation (EC) No 415/2007 as amended by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/838, building on the international VTT standard adopted in 2006. Inland AIS interoperates with maritime AIS but uses a distinct inland message set and is mandatory on many EU inland waterways.
